Hexadecimal
A number and counting system based on 16. The digits are 0 through F. In computers, Hex numbers are derived from the binary numbers stored on disk and in RAM. The advantage of Hex is that more information can be stored in less space. Hex 00 is the same as Dec 00. However, Hex FF represents Dec 256.

Hexadecimal color-notation system
A way of defining colors. Uses RGB scheme and associates a two digit hexadecimal number with each base color (red, green and blue).

Hinfo Record
Host Information Record. Strictly informational, not functional. Used to declare the computer type and operating system of a host.

Hit
In the WWW world "hit" is used to describe a single request made by a web browser. The data transmitted by the web server in response to the request is a text file or a binary file (images, audio, video, executables and other data).

Home Page
Main web page owned by a company, organization or an individual. This is the page that is initially displayed when user makes a request for a particular domain name.

Host
A networked computer dedicated to providing a certain kind of service. Usually refers to a computer that stores the website files and has a web server running on it.

Hosting
Pointing a domain to a specific server through DNS and having files stored on that server for viewing by the public.

Hosting reseller
A person or company that doesn't actually have any hardware. A hosting reseller signs up for a reseller account with a web host and has the ability to sell space on that account. Usually responsible for first level support and billing.

Hostmaster field
The second field of an SOA record. Informational only, it holds the E-Mail address of the person responsible for maintaining the zone.

Hostname
A Hostname is any domain name that has one or more IP addresses associated with it. The association is created by placing an A record in the zone that owns the domain name.

htaccess
This is an apache directives file. It is a method for modifying the way apache behaves for a specific directory. Commonly used to diplay custom 404 pages.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language
Hyper Text Markup Language is the language by which Web servers and client browsers communicate. All server-side functions (such as database processing), although they may be performed in another language, must eventually be output back to the user in HTML.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
Stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the protocol by which HTML files move across the Internet. HTTP requires a client browser and an HTTP server (typically a Web server).

HTTPS - Secure
The HyperText Transport Protocol (Secure), the standard encrypted communication mechanism on the World Wide Web. This is actually just HTTP over SSL.

Hub
A hub is a network device that is used for connecting computers on a Local Are Network (LAN). It forwards all the packets it receives to all of its ports.

Hyperlink
A part of the web page that links to another web page. By clicking on a hyperlink user redirects the browser to another page. The word hyperlink is sometimes shortened to just "link".

Hypertext
A text on the web page that is linked to another webpage. Browsers usually display hypertext as underlined and in blue color.
